Aussie Mates in the States

Our International greyhound rehoming partner headquartered in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

The availability of retired racing greyhounds has greatly diminished with the closures of all but two racetracks in the United States.  The Greyhound Network works with the Aussie Mates in the States team to assist with rehoming retired racing greyhounds in the United States.

Greyhound welfare is first and foremost when transporting overseas.  Each hound is assessed for temperament and needs to meet certain criteria in order to be selected for the US rehoming program.  Confident, healthy and non-injured greyhounds are selected.  They are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, have had dental work and are on monthly preventative before they leave Sydney.

At every step of the way, our team is dedicated to making the adoption process smooth, enjoyable, and ultimately rewarding for both you and your new greyhound companion. We can't wait to help you find your perfect match and welcome a new member into your family!

The Adoption Experience

“Getting to know you”

Technically this is the interview and screening step, yet it’s really a two way conversation to confirm a greyhound would suit your lifestyle. For first time adopters, we tell you more about the breed and their needs. Beware, we love to talk greyhound! If you have children and pets, we’ll discuss their readiness and acceptance of a new pack member.

“Home Visit”

Home visits are for the sole purpose of helping you prepare a safe environment for a greyhound. Some examples: Sliding glass door? Put painter’s tape of post-it notes to alert the hound it’s not an opening. Wooden floors? Add some carpet runners to help the greyhound get traction. Fencing? Make sure there aren’t any items that could help a dog go over the fence. We are solution oriented and have lots of experience on preparing homes for greyhounds.

“Let’s find a dog!”

We’ll work together on selecting your greyhound. The Aussie Mates in the States team does a remarkable job of capturing the dog’s personality, assessment of Prey drive (think, cat and small dog workable), size and activity level.
