Aussie Mates in the States sets the Gold Standard for International Greyhound Rehoming programs.

The availability of retired racing greyhounds has greatly diminished with the closures of all but two racetracks in the United States.  Due to the high standards and ongoing commitment to the greyhounds from New South Wales, The Greyhound Network works exclusively with the Aussie Mates in the States team to assist with rehoming retired racing greyhounds in the United States because of the predictability and quality of the greyhounds they trust to send to us.

Greyhound welfare is first and foremost when transporting overseas.  Since racing greyhounds are not allowed to live at the racetrack, instead, they reside with the racing participant. Each greyhound’s behavior and temperament assessment is done in partnership with the participant and one of the Regional Coordinators. For example, How is the greyhound with other sizes and breeds of dogs? How about exposure to children and if so, what ages. The program further tests for small dog, cat workability, ability to navigate stairs and overall prey drive.

The Aussie Mates in the States program has criteria for greyhounds to be considered for the US rehoming program.  Greyhounds between the ages of 2 and 7 years of age, no residual injuries requiring plates or screws and they need to be parasite free. Once they enter the program, they begin a three week crate desensitization program. The dogs are slowly introduced to their tailor made crate, in a room where the lighting, temperature and sounds mirror the cargo hold of the airplane. Should at any step there are signs of stress, the greyhound is rehomed domestically. By the time they leave Sydney for the US, the dogs are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, have had dental work and are on monthly preventative before they leave Sydney. Right before departure, the greyhounds are examined again by the veterinarian to confirm the hound is fit to fly.
